Let's talk about the huskarls for the Goth civ in Age of Empires.
While working on The Conquerors I also added new unique units and techs to all the old civs, so everyone would feel special.
Now, the Goth civ focuses on infantry. Their basic unit in the late game are Champions - heavy infantry. The Goths get cheap infantry, and train them faster, so they're great at pumping out the champs to overwhelm an enemy.
The counter-unit to heavy infantry in Age of Empires is archers, which is also true historically. So when the Goths come to your town, you churn out crossbowmen and shoot them full of arrows. Now, if the Goths were a normal civ, they'd invest in cavalry or skirmishers to protect their champs. (Cav & skirms are the anti-archer units.)
But I wanted the Goths to have another option, so I designed the huskarl, their unique unit, to have a huge Pierce armor, making them highly resistant to normal archers. This means the Goths could use huskarls to accompany their champs into a town. The huskarls can then go after archers while the champs burn houses & murder villagers.
Huskarls initially come from the castle, which slows production, but I gave them the special unique tech of Anarchy which lets them produce Huskarls from barracks. They make a great addition to your toolkit when playing Goths.
I regard the Huskarl as one of my most successful super units. It does something unusual and fits well into the Goth play style.
